Monte Zebio

Open Air Museum of the great war

The Zebio, with its central location, became an important stronghold of the Austrian resistance line (between summer and autumn of 1916 1918) ran from Val d Assa to Ortigara.
For this reason it was equipped to defense with a complex system of trenches, tunnels and underground stations still largely visible.

Mount Zebio

Mount Zebio and the mine of Scalambron

During the summer of 1916 and especially at the time of the battle of Ortigara (10-June 25, 1917) the Italian troops attacked Austrian positions repeatedly without achieving any success.
Notorious is the story of mina (made by the Italians under the spur of the bezel from autumn 1916) who broke inopportunely, perhaps due to lightning, the June 8, 1917 at 17.30, (with two days earlier than intended), causing the explosion of galleries. 120 Italian soldiers lost their lives: to these must be added over forty officers of the Brigade Catania which at that time was being watched from the Austrian positions in anticipation of the upcoming battle of Ortigara.

Recently the town of Asiago, initiated the recovery and enhancement of the Austrian positions della Crocetta of Zebio (immediately above the hut Zebio) and so-called mixed media Scalambron by cleaning and consolidation of part of the trench of resistance and the mine crater, recovery of the bays, gravestones and barracks located in the immediate rear and installing tables and explanatory panels.
Near the refuge Stalder also was created, on the track of an old Italian wall walk, a stretch of educational entrenchment composed of some sections "type" are derived from an examination of vintage documentary material and in particular by the provisions of the military engineers ' army. We have finally to rearrange the adjacent former military cemetery where they were buried many dead of the Sassari Brigade and, further South, the remains of the Italian command. All areas affected by the interventions of accommodation museums are connected by a circular route that allows an easy and safe visit.
