| MEZZASELVA DI ROANA
Mezzaselva is one of the six districts (or quarters) belonging to
the municipality of Roana.
It is a small touristic center that lies on the sunny west side of
the Asiago Plateau, close to the valley known as Val d'Assa
Mezzaselva is only 8 km (5 miles) far from Asiago city center
and just 10 minutes away from the cross-country runs in
Campolongo and from the sky slopes of Mount Verena. |

HISTORY
Mezzaselva was founded by ancient folks coming from
Northern Europe and it was firstly named "Mitteballe" (which
means "in the center of the forest/woods).
While in Mezzaselva, you might notice that many places and
streets are still named with Cimbric toponyms and that some
words and sentences of this very old idiom are still used in the
everyday language.
This Cimbric idiom, still spoken just by the oldest part of
the population, was commonly used until WWII. |

LITTLE-KNOWN FACTS
Right on the top of Mount Verena you can
visit the ruins of the Italian Fort from which the first cannon shot
of WWI was fired on May 24, 1915. In the Val d'Assa Valley
there are numerous rock carvings that date back to the prehystoric
age.
Access to the Valley is free, but the most ancient carvings are in a
protected area and can be seen only with a guided tour.
In the nearby district of Rotzo you can visit the "Bostel",
an archeological site where traces of the first human settlement in
the Asiago Plateau can be found. |
